Old settlers are treated to weekend of fun

A warm, fall day and thousands of people were a perfect combination this past weekend for the 94th annual Old Settlers' Day.

The annual golf tournament Friday at Marion Country Club kicked off the weekend of events. Twenty-four teams of four players participated in the tournament.

Some members of class reunions traveled to Lyons to watch the Marion High School football team defeat Lyons High School, 14-6.

Marion Country Club hosted an open house Friday for classmates and guests.

Several thousand spectators lined Main Street Saturday morning to watch the annual parade.

This year's theme was "Marion: Ready to Thrive in 2005."

One longtime tradition changed this year when the parade line-up area changed from streets in Jex Addition to Walnut Street. Washington and Jefferson streets also were used for staging parade participants.

Almost as much of a tradition as the parade itself, trains crossed the West Main Street crossing either before or during the parade.

Pauline Holub, parade chairman, reported the staging of the parade went smoothly.

Community leader Margo Yates served as grand marshal. Yates was chosen by Marion Kiwanis Club for her efforts in promoting Marion as a community volunteer and in paid positions.

The Kiwanis club prepared and served a picnic in Central Park following the parade. Four serving lines served 650 people beef burger meals in 40 minutes. Pies were furnished by St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary.

Children of all ages and adults participated in traditional games after lunch.

Marion High School band and flag corps, under the direction of Mike Connell, presented an afternoon concert.

The annual alumni recognition began at 2:30 p.m. where alumni classes were recognized and members introduced.

A community dance Saturday evening at Marion Country Club capped the weekend of reminiscing and remembering.

The event is sponsored by Marion Kiwanis Club with donations from local businesses and individuals.
