Old settlers come home to Marion this weekend

Old settlers from near and far will gather in Marion this weekend for the 94th annual Old Settlers' Day.

The weekend of events will begin Friday at Marion Country Club with a golf tournament. Rounds will be played at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Contact Gene Winkler at (620) 382-2115 for more information.

During and after the day of golfing, the country club clubhouse will be open to the public.

The clubhouse will remain open during the evening to accommodate class reunions and the community.

Saturday morning will start at 8 a.m. with the Old Settlers' Day Run. Participants can run in the 5k run or walk a one-mile fun-run at Marion County Lake. Registration will be at Marion City Building.

Marion Historical Museum, located on Main Street east of Central Park, will be open from 9 am. to 5 p.m.

The annual parade will be at 11 a.m. beginning on West Main Street.

This year's parade line-up will be on Walnut Street and side streets that meet up with Walnut Street.

The theme is "Marion: Ready to Thrive in 2005."

Immediately following the parade, Marion Kiwanis Club will serve a picnic in Central Park.

Four serving lines will serve beef sandwiches, chips, beans, pie, water, and soft drinks. Proceeds from the meal will be used for community service projects.

Games will begin at 1 p.m. in the park. Children of all ages will enjoy traditional games, races, and contests.

Marion High School Band will perform at 2 p.m. near the gazebo under the direction of Mike Connell.

Alumni will be recognized beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the gazebo. All MHS classes that are holding reunions will be recognized.

At 3 p.m., the MHS FFA will have a mud run for two-wheel drive all-terrain vehicles at Green Acres Raceway. There is a $2 admission for spectators. Contact Mark Meyer at (620) 382-3111 to register.

The day will conclude with a community-wide dance from 8 p.m. to midnight at Marion Country Club. The dance will be held outdoors with a DJ providing music. There is a $5 per person admission charge.
