Old settlers treated to weekend of fun

Young and old settlers enjoyed the 93rd annual Old Settlers' Day this past weekend and deemed it a success.

The annual golf tournament Friday at Marion Country Club attracted 96 golfers to the greens.

On Friday evening classmates reunited at Warrior Stadium to watch the Warrior football team defeat Lyons, 14-7.

Following the football game, the reunion continued at Marion Country Club where a social was held.

On Saturday morning several thousand spectators lined Main Street to watch the annual parade.

This year's theme was "65th Anniversary of Marion County Park and Lake."

Grand marshals were Helen and Dwight Beckham, Dale Snelling, and John Waner.

The Beckhams had organized a group to raise funds for a statue to be erected at the county lake commemorating the men who built the lake, the Civilian Conservation Corps. Dedication of the CCC statue will be at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Snelling is the current lake superintendent and Waner was the superintendent prior to Snelling.

Following the parade, Marion Kiwanis Club served a picnic in the park. More than 600 meals were served in 30 minutes. Four lines were formed to feed the hungry crowd hot burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, chips and a piece of homemade pie. Pies were furnished by the ladies' hospital auxiliary.

Following the mid-day picnic in Central Park, many enjoyed the traditional games and egg toss. Others spent the afternoon visiting and reminiscing.

Marion High School band and flag corps, under the direction of Mike Connell, presented a concert at 2 p.m.

The annual alumni recognition began at 2:30 p.m.

Coming from 16 states, 186 Marion High School alumni from 10 classes holding reunions crossed the gazebo stage.

On Saturday evening a community dance was held at Marion Country Club.

The tradition will continue next year. Pauline Holub, president-select of Marion Kiwanis Club, will serve as parade chairman. Stan Ploutz, president-elect, will serve as event chairman.
