Only one indoor pool proposed by school district

Outdoor pool not eligible for state aid

Marion City Commission was informed Dec. 28, that there only will be one indoor swimming pool proposed by USD 408.

Lee Leiker, USD 408 superintendent, told the commission that an outdoor pool did not meet the criteria to receive state funding. Therefore, the board of education decided it was prudent to pursue an indoor pool with an outside area for those who want to sunbathe during warmer weather.

The city will continue the partnership with the school district for the project for the indoor pool.

Eliminating the outdoor pool also will reduce the cost of the project by a million dollars, said Leiker.

"This change allows us to look at options," Leiker said. One option could be the addition of a slide for the pool.

A zero entry level, swimming lanes, diving area, and water therapy area remained in the plans, he said.

Leiker also reported that the board of education had approved the latest drawing by an architect regarding the location of an auditorium. The proposed site is between the Hill Building and a city water tower, on the Marion High School/Middle School campus.

Parking will be created by the gymnasium.

A new gymnasium and indoor pool will be on the east end of the lot where the current city swimming pool is located on North Thorp Street. A parking lot will be constructed that could be shared with Marion Elementary School.

The total estimated cost of the project is $9 million. A bond issue for $8 million will be sought, said Leiker. The school district has some funds available and the City of Marion also will contribute to the operation and maintenance of the swimming pool.

The plan for all projects will be submitted to the state for approval. When the state approves it, the district then can place the issue on the ballot for the April election.

Information will be gathered regarding anticipated expenses for an indoor pool, said Leiker. An operation and maintenance agreement will be drawn between the district and the city.

A special school board meeting was held Tuesday) to further discuss and finalize plans.
