OSD 2005: Another one for the record books years ago

Staff reporter

With nearly perfect weather Saturday, several thousand people crowded Main Street from Walnut Street to Marion High School to watch floats, bands, and dignitaries pass by during the 95th Old Settlers' Day parade.

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Marion County Courthouse, the parade theme was "Marion County Courthouse: A Century of Service."

Dan Holub and daughter Tamra Holub marched with the Marion VFW color guard. Following them was the McConnell Air Force color guard.

Marion City Council proclaimed Saturday as Molly Holub Day. Molly was chauffeured in the parade by retired Marine Col. Dick Schwartz in a vintage Ford Mustang.

Behind the Mustang were members of the Kansas American Legion Riders who also represent the Kansas Patriot Guard.

Marion City Council rode in style aboard the city's new fire truck.

Grand marshals Gerry Grentz, Max Hayen, June Jost, LaVaughn Klose, Dorothy Lawrence, and Dorothy Melcher rode in a horse-drawn carriage. The former county elected officials and employees represented all past employees of Marion County Courthouse.

Members of Marion High School class of 1931 celebrated their 75th reunion. They were Evelyn Olsen Ollenberger, Mary Grubb Herbert, and Harold Bowers. Bowers also wore a track letter on his hat as he was the state record holder for the 440.

Other classes represented in the parade were the classes of 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1981, 1991, 1996, and 2001.

Marching bands were from Marion High School, Marion Middle School, Hillsboro High School, Peabody-Burns High School, and Peabody-Burns Middle School.

Sixteen floats representing churches, high school classes, businesses, and organizations competed for prize money and recognition.

After the parade, the throng gathered at Central Park for lunch served by Marion Kiwanis Club. After lunch, games were played, the MHS band performed, and class introductions were made.

This year, the class of 1956 held an assembly, complete with a talent show.

On Friday, a golf tournament was held at Marion Country Club. The results are on a sports page of this edition of the Marion County Record.

More than 30 people toured Marion County Lake Saturday evening with tour guide Landon Leiker. A dance was held Saturday night at Marion Country Club.

The annual event is sponsored each year by Marion Kiwanis Club and through local donations. Funds are used within the community by the Kiwanis Club to help children and families.
