Outages caused by faulty Westar line

Electrical outages in Marion and throughout the county were attributed to line problems by Westar Energy, reported Harvey Sanders, Marion Public Utilities Director.

Sanders made the report Monday at Marion City Commission meeting.

Marion residents were without electricity for about 90 minutes late Sunday night. Hillsboro and other county residents experienced an outage beginning Monday morning but the problem was corrected by afternoon.

In other business:

— City economic development director Jami Williams was appointed to serve the unexpired term of Dan Crumrine, who represented Marion County Park & Lake, on the city's planning commission.

Other members of the commission are Darvin Markley, Roger Schwab, Nick Nickelson, Ralph Kreutziger, Alan Kruse, and Sally Hannaford.

— The city's new fire truck has been delivered. Optional equipment that was ordered for the truck will arrive in two to three weeks.

— Sanders reported that poles have been set for the electrical upgrade at the county courthouse. Also two blocks of Main Street, between Third and Fifth streets, will be on the 12.5 line.

— Marty Fredrickson, street superintendent, reported a major water line broke at Denver and Locust and will be replaced.

— Marion High School graduate Stephen Janzen has been hired by Marion Police Department. He will begin work today (Wednesday) as a police officer.

— Williams reported she continues to finalize paperwork for a microloan for a new business, application for Neighborhood Revitalization Program where a property owner will be reimbursed for property taxes, met with two individuals interested in housing developments, encouraged an out-of-town real estate agent to open an office in Marion and join Marion Chamber of Commerce, talked with local business owner interested in expanding with more recreational equipment and looking for ideas, and talked with Bob Brooks regarding developing town homes near Marion Assisted Living.

— Marion Economic Development Advisory Board recently met and will focus on one goal at a time. The first goal is to support USD 408 school bond issue. Members of the board are Don Bredemeier, Alex Case, Hilary Dolbee, Andy Hansen, Max Hayen, Jim Hefley, Ralph Kreutziger, Nick Nickelson, Stan Reed, Tim Richmond, Anita Seacat, Tim Stevenson, Tom Stout, and Margaret Wilson with city administrator David Mayfield and Williams.

— The commission approved the February investment, collateral, and financial statement, four voided checks, warrants, and payroll.

The next commission meeting is 4 p.m. Monday in the city building.
