Parade entries being sought for Operation Celebration

"You can never have enough," said Peabody Main Street director Shane Marler of the number of entries slated for spots in the Memorial Day weekend extravaganza, "Operation Celebration: 1940s."

Marler and other Main Street members are especially anxious to round up as many Marion County World War II veterans as they can. Veterans from all wars and peacetime service also are welcome to participate.

The parade will begin at 4 p.m. May 24 at Peabody-Burns High School and travel downtown where exhibits, food, and swing band music will highlight the evening.

"We are working through the logistics of getting our veterans on floats, trams, or in vintage cars," said Marler. "We don't have all the kinks worked out yet, but things are falling into place nicely."

Marler also indicated a need for vintage vehicles (pre-1945), floats with a WWII theme, and a couple of marching bands.

"We have a donation for a prize for the best float," he said. "So we are able to offer $100 to the float that exhibits the best WWII front line or home front theme.

"The competition is open to individuals, families, clubs, businesses, everyone!"
