Terri Turley of Ramona is doing something positive for kids in northern Marion County. She has established Cougars Den, a program for teen-agers at Lincolnville Community Center.

"I love kids," she said. "And I want them to be able to have a positive environment to get together and have fun, respectfully, and to encourage peer friendships and involvement."

The teen center is for junior high and high school students and will be open this summer approximately one day a week from 6-10 p.m.

For a one-time fee of $5, a teenager receives a membership card. A non-member who wishes to attend one evening can pay a fee of $1. Members are required to sign an emergency form.

Indoor and outdoor activities are available, along with a snack bar.

No alcohol, drugs, smoking, or foul language is allowed. Cougars Den or Lincolnville Community Center are not liable for accidents or damages.

Cougars Den opened June 6. The schedule for the remainder of the summer is: June 13, 20, and 29 (Saturday dance); July 11, 21 (Saturday dance), and 25; and Aug 1. A back-to-school wiener roast will be held Aug. 18.

Turley said if she receives a good response, she may continue Cougars Den during the school year.

She and her husband, Jake, live in rural Ramona. They have two children, ages 13 and seven.

She said the community has been supportive of her efforts. She has received sponsorships from several area businesses. Lincolnville City Council approved a $50 contribution June 4 from the city.

Turley welcomes more contributions to purchase additional items for the teen center, including games, balls, and kitchen supplies.
