Perfect storm of sports

Sports reporter

For a sports fan, it doesn't get much better than this time of the year. And I'm not just talking about March Madness.

Sure, that's a huge part of making this month the Mecca of sports months.

Don't forget the smell of fresh green grass signaling the start of the Major League Baseball season, the final few weeks before the NBA and NHL playoffs, and the ping of an aluminum bat meaning college baseball and softball are in full swing.

In other words, it's not a good time for households with just one sports fan.

Still, it's the time of year where the casual sports fan turns into that guy with a painted face, beer gut, and one of those foam fingers.

The NCAA basketball tournament has turned into a three-week Super Bowl. Steroids, like it or not, has piqued people's interest in baseball. Even the biggest NBA haters who say the college game is much more "pure," can't help but marvel at Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, and all the other incredible athletes on display during the April-to-June playoff march.

The only thing missing right now is the NFL, and if you just can't live without the pigskin, the indoor Arena Football League and it's 80-yard fields is in the middle of its season.

As long as you don't root for the Colorado Buffaloes, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Boston Celtics, there are enough sports going on where surely one of your favorite teams is doing well.

And if that still isn't the case, at least April brings more than just showers. It marks the start of the Warriors' hectic spring sports season.

And that's an understatement.

MHS alone has 30 sporting events in 43 days starting March 30, and that's not counting regional or state tournaments, or the entire Marion Middle School season.

So, sports fans, get ready to be entertained nearly every day for the next few months. And non-sports fans, you may want to think about becoming one.

Either that, or hiding.
