Pilgrimage planned to honor Father Kapaun

The third annual military pilgrimage to Pilsen will be held Nov. 11, Veterans Day, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Holy Family Parish, Pilsen.

Mass will be at 11 a.m., followed by a wreath-laying at the site of the Father Emil Kapaun statue.

Fort Leavenworth is in charge of this year's pilgrimage.

Among the dignitaries in attendance will be the members of the archdiocese for military services from Washington, D.C., Bishop Paul Coakley of the Salina diocese, and chaplains and clergy.

Lunch will be served following the ceremony with proceeds benefiting the Father Kapaun Guild.

Chaplain Kapaun served in World War II, and the Korean Conflict when he was captured by communist forces Nov. 2, 1950.

Until the date of his death on May 23, 1951, Kapaun cared for POWs in the communist prison camp. He was awarded the Army's Distinguished Service Cross posthumously, and was named "Servant of God" by the Roman Catholic Church, the first step toward canonization.

The archdiocese for military services and the Wichita diocese are promoting Father Kapaun being canonized (being named a saint).
