Pilsen couple has first baby of the year

Jesse and Ashton Smith of Pilsen are first-time parents of a baby girl born Jan. 10 at Mercy Hospital in Moundridge.

Little Sydney was the first baby born at the hospital in 2008. She weighed six pounds, three ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long.

The couple said they chose Mercy Hospital because they wanted their baby to be born in a smaller hospital.

"I had heard a lot of good things about Mercy," Ashton said. "It was worth the drive."

Their doctor was Paul Ullum-Minich of Moundridge.

Local businesses presented gifts to the new family.

Sydney's grandparents are Phil and Jan Smith, Lincolnville, and Russell and Julie Kerbs, Tampa.

Great-grandparents are Reuben and Lucille Kerbs, Tampa; Agnes Bina and Irene Werner, Marion; Lorene Smith, Lincolnville; and the late Ernest Bina, Percy Smith, and Frank Werner.
