The closing Oct. 1 of Main Street Grocery in Lincolnville left residents without a local source for basic necessities.

Joe and Tisch Vinduska, operators of Pilsen Packrats, have stepped in to fill the gap.

Their business is head-quartered in a mini-mall located on Main Street. Tisch runs a "new and not-so-new" shop offering garage sale and damaged freight items.

The newly established convenience store offers milk, bread, eggs, ready-made sandwiches and sausage biscuits, and snack food.

Soda pop, coffee, and juice also are available along with Danish and other rolls.

Other basics such as bath tissue, paper towels, and canned goods are being added as the demand grows.

"We're starting out slow," Tisch said.

The store carries the Marion County Record and Herington Times.

A bathroom has been installed for the convenience of travelers. A new dropped ceiling and insulation is in the works.

The store currently is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Tisch said Saturday hours may be shortened.

The Vinduskas are planning to add movie rentals and are considering selling furniture and appliances in another section of the building.

Joe does tire repair in the shop area at the west end. He has a family connection to the building. His grandfather worked there when it was a service station.

The building has a long history of other uses including a grocery store, TV repair shop, and implement dealership.
