Plans for trail move forward

Another step was taken Monday in improving and promoting a city hiking/biking trail.

Marion City Council approved a lease agreement with CKC (Central Kansas Conservancy) for using the former railbed.

The trail is usable but needs more improvements, Alex Case said.

A request was made to ask the city to provide manpower and equipment for preparation of the trail for public use. The city's assistance also was requested in keeping the trail clear of property and debris that currently is along the trail.

A "Friends of the Trail" fund will be established at a local bank where people can donate money to help offset maintenance costs associated with the trail. A future landmark may be erected to recognize those people who contributed.

Case explained that the city would be the custodian of the trail and current liability insurance would cover it.

The trail runs from Marion City Library along the railbed to the dike. From there, the dike can be accessed and used as a trail. The goal is to make a full loop which would end at the library, more than four miles.

Marion High School teacher Mark Meyer has been contacted and has agreed to build trash receptacles to be placed along the trail.

City attorney Dan Baldwin explained that the railroad still owns the property. When railroad tracks are abandoned, adjoining property owners can access the railbeds. CKC acquired the right-of-way and was granting their rights to the city for the trail.

Appropriate signs, weed control, and patrolling are required. If the railroad ever wanted it back, the city and CKC would have to relinquish.

A work day is tentatively set for Jan. 6, to help clear tree limbs and debris.
