Poor attendance shows lack of support

To the Editor:

Jessica Bernhardt, a senior a Marion High School, came to Ecker-Slifer-Fulkerson VFW Post 6958, Marion, Aug. 16 to share experiences of her trip to a leadership conference in Washington, D.C., this summer. She wanted to share her experiences with those who were interested in what opportunities are available for our youth and to give a report to those who helped support her financially.

Those in attendance thought she had a good presentation and were delighted to give up an hour of their lives so Jessica could relive this special time of her life and be able to pass on the special moments to those who were willing to come hear her presentation.

The number of those in attendance that evening was very low. It makes one wonder if this is why the youth can't enter the workplace in Marion County and why, after leaving upon graduation from high school, they don't want to return.

If this is the kind of interest and attention that is paid to our youth, no wonder they want to go elsewhere and no wonder they use other methods to gain notoriety.

My hope is that the article in the paper the week prior to her presentation, inviting the public to attend went unnoticed, that Cable 22 does not come in on your TV, or that your memory failed and you just didn't remember to come.

The youth probably is one of the greatest assets there is in the growth of a community. The VFW and its ladies' auxiliary will continue to do programs for and with the youth of today because they stand for the future of all our tomorrows.

Isn't it possible that what a person sees, hears, and feels from elsewhere could help the hometown community? Therefore, if money is put into a youth's project, wouldn't it be worth the time to allow them to report back their findings.

Thank you, Jessica. You were money well spent. The Marion VFW and its ladies' auxiliary can honestly say this because we were there and enjoyed hearing all about the memorable and learning experiences of your trip to Washington, D.C.
