Poor shooting does in Warriors in evenly-matched game

Sports reporter

Just looking at a stat sheet from Friday's Marion-Hoisington girls' basketball game, might lead one to think the Warriors defeated the Cardinals.

But Hoisington proved the only stat that matters is the final score, as the Cardinals downed Marion High School, 54-49.

MHS had more steals, blocks, assists, offensive rebounds, three-pointers, and less turnovers than Hoisington, but shot just 29 percent for the game. The loss dropped the Warriors to 0-1 in the Mid-Central Activities Association, and 3-4 overall.

Head coach Daryl Enos didn't think his team played a perfect game, but had the girls shot even 35 percent, they could have won by double-digits.

"I think that was a lot of it," Enos said of the poor shooting. "We just couldn't buy a basket."

Allie Maddox continued her hot play with 19 points and 11 rebounds, but shot just 8-24 from the field.

Toni Gordon had 15 points, and Megan Hudson 10, but the Warriors managed just five points, all from Erin Carr, from the other four girls who saw action.

In defense of the team, they had just seven girls play due to a season-ending injury to reserve Morgan Cady.

Enos said he may use one more player in the rotation, but it's possible the girls will be playing with just seven players the rest of the way.

"We're in pretty good shape," Enos said. "But we're going to have to be in top shape," Enos said.

It looked like they were in the first quarter scoring 16 points, but a lapse in their full-court press allowed Hoisington to score 18 points.

The offense scored half as many points in the second quarter, as MHS trailed 30-24 at the break.

The Warriors chipped away in the third quarter out-scoring HHS 12-10, and cutting the lead to four heading into the final quarter.

The Cardinals jumped out quick in the final quarter with an 11-4 run, seemingly grabbing the victory.

But MHS wasn't ready to fold yet. Three straight baskets from Gordon cut the lead to 51-46 with around two minutes left, but Hoisington was at the line with a one-and-one.

The Cardinals missed, and Kari Tajchman grabbed the rebound. Her outlet pass led to a three-pointer by Erin Carr to cut the lead to two.

After a free throw by the Cardinals, MHS missed three-pointers on two straight possessions. HHS would add a basket late, and claim the five-point victory.

"Coming back showed some determination," Enos said. "We just didn't do enough of the good stuff to win."

MHS traveled to Collegiate Tuesday, and plays host Friday to Ellinwood.
