Powerlifting competition a success

Sports reporter

With an increase of 50 weight lifters over 2005, the 2006 3A Kansas state powerlifting competition was successful for the fifth year in a row at Marion High School.

MHS football coach Grant Thierolf ran the program once again with the help of other coaches, and volunteers from the community.

When all was said and done more than 400 male and female athletes pumped weights, set records, and had fun.

The Warrior boys' team finished tied for 14th out of 27 teams with a total of eight points.

Senior Casey Nelson was the top-placer, taking third in the 172-pound weight class.

His combined 865-pound lift in the squat, bench press, and clean, earned six points for the Warriors. He led all MHS competitors in the clean with a lift of 250 pounds. His squat of 370 pounds was second only to Preston Williams' 455 in the MHS group. Williams was the top bench presser as well, topping off at 260 pounds. Nelson tied Josh Kelsey for second with 245 pounds.

Williams' top lifts, combined with his 210-pound clean, gave him a fifth place finish in the 220-pound class and the Warriors their other two points.

Female lifters Allie Maddox, Jayde Hess, and Kimber Hardey contributed to the scoreboard as well.

The Warriors racked up 11 points on the girls' side, finishing tied for ninth out of 23 teams.

Maddox earned a second-place finish in her class, totaling 456 total pounds.

She was second in all three categories for Warrior lifters. She lifted 240 pounds in the squat, benched 105 pounds, and cleaned 120 pounds.

Hardey led all Warriors with lifts of 285, 120, and 125 respectively, giving her fifth place in her class.

The final Warrior points were earned by Hess, who took sixth in her class.

Hess' squat of 135 pounds, her 80-pound bench, and 75-pound clean, gave her a total of 290 pounds.
