Program will teach girls to become entrepreneurs

Selected girls will be taking part in a new national Girl Scouts program that teaches teens how to design and lead entrepreneurial projects to strengthen their communities.

"Challenge and Change: Challenge Yourself, Change the World" is for girls 14-17 years of age, and helps build leadership, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship skills. Girls learn about their communities by mapping local assets and identifying local experts. They devise a project idea, and then lead a community team to turn the plan into action.

Marion County adults are asked to support the program by sharing their stories and successes.

On July 18, the Girl Scouts will visit Peabody to talk with Kristen Hooper, director of Peabody Main Street Association; Doe Ann Hague of The Hub, Inc.; and Jacob and Joshua Marshall of Peabody Printing Museum. The girls will learn how a business can benefit a community more than just providing a service.

Pat Wick and Jessica Gilbert of Ramona and Linda Ogden, director of Communities in Schools of Marion County, will lead activities with the girls to develop community-building skills.

Anyone interested in participating in the program should contact Kitty Frank at (800) 342-4532.
