Putting our best foot forward

The Marion community has an opportunity to shine this weekend when the 12-and-under Cal Ripken State Tournament of Champions comes to town.

Eight baseball teams, parents, grandparents, and other fans will be in town Wednesday to Sunday for the tournament. They will visit restaurants, convenience stores, motels, and other businesses.

The teams will play at Marion's baseball complex — one of the best in the state.

It's a golden opportunity for us — businesses and residents — to put our best foot forward and show visitors what a fine community we have. Not only will we reap instant economic rewards of increased traffic in town, we have the chance to build some lasting impressions of Marion for visitors from across the state.

Above all, we have the opportunity to watch some talented athletes and good baseball.

Games begin at noon Thursday. Opening ceremonies will be held at 6:15 p.m. Games continue through Sunday with the awards and closing ceremonies immediately following the final tournament game.

Spend some time at the ball field this weekend. See some great baseball, meet some new people, and show them what a friendly place Marion can be.
