Rail bed cleared for hikers, bikers

Volunteers made significant headway Saturday morning as they cleared small trees, branches, and brush from a rail bed west of Marion.

Within two hours, the 12 volunteers and three community service workers made short work of the overgrown area that will be a hiking and biking trail.

"We made excellent progress," said Casey Case, the trail creator and promoter.

Phase I of the project is to lay an all-weather surface on the rail bed from Marion City Library on South Third Street to the dike, northwest of the city.

"That portion is ready to use," he said.

Those interested in using the scenic trail can access it at Marion Transfer Station on Santa Fe Street and can follow the rail bed to the dike area.

City of Marion workers removed the branches and other debris Monday morning.

Other work days are planned.

Anyone interested in assisting should call Case at (620) 382-2106 or 3456.
