Random Thoughts

Do people still write round-robins? A round-robin is a letter started by one person, sent to a friend or relative, who adds her news, sends it on to a third person, and so on. Maybe there are five or six people in the group. The last person gets to pay a horrendous postage bill.

Letter writing is getting to be a lost art. E-mail has taken over. That doesn't seem very personal. Today I received a letter from a woman in Barranquilla, Columbia. She is a professor and missionary in a college there. I just met her once when she made a talk in Wichita, but I wrote to her and that is how our correspondence started.

Some people criticize Oprah for spending all that money for schools for girls in Africa. They think she should spend it in our country. She does do that, too, but if she can do something to bring those people out of darkness, abuse, and ignorance, what an effect it will have in the world. Maybe stop wars. Our girls have the privilege to attend school here, if they put the effort into it.

I am now reading a sweet little book written by a man about his deceased wife. It's a wonderful tribute to her and funny, too. He has written lots of books and articles for magazines. The writer is Calvin Tillin. I plan to check the library for more of his work.

A friend of mine who has been on a great vacation in California was having a wonderful time until she and a friend went bicycling with disastrous results. Now she is in the hospital for repair. Why do things like that happen? I'm sure she wonders.
