The memorial services at the cemetery on Memorial Day were very meaningful. The Rev. Brett Huebner gave a fine talk and the military did their part, always impressive. The VFW served a fine noon meal. Margaret Vinduska played World War I numbers on the piano. Brought back memories. Back in the days when we had a river through Marion, the women's auxiliary riding in a truck tossed peonies from the bridge to the river honoring the Navy.

Do you remember May Day when we had a May queen and the young girls wound the bright ribbons around the May pole? We mothers worked hours making pretty May baskets and filling them with candy and spring flowers. The children would slip to a neighbor's house and hang the basket on the door knob.

My husband used to tell me how his mother made delicious Boston cream candy for his baskets. Older boys would follow him and swipe the candy.

The item in the past Marion County Record tells of when President Roosevelt and Eleanor appeared on the train which stopped in Florence. There he made a talk from the train. Nearly everybody went down there to see them.

We owe Helen and Dwight Beckham thanks for obtaining a letter written by Eleanor on the occasion. We didn't realize at the time that we were part of history. The Beckhams have brought much interest to our beautiful Marion County Lake.

We practically raised our children out there. We had picnics there almost every evening in the summer.

Phyllis Melton promoted some early morning breakfasts out there. Nothing tastes better than bacon and eggs and coffee out there on the banks of our county lake.
