Random Thoughts

Fourth of July! I do hear a few pops in the neighborhood. I can remember when I used to be right in the middle shooting firecrackers like all the kids. Tonight I'll watch fireworks on TV and think about Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and other founding fathers. What a wonderful job they did. Just think, 200 years and we are still surviving all the terrible wars and the bad troubles that Mother Nature sends this way. God bless America!

I happened to read an article about the cereus plant. That brought back a memory. I was invited to a night blooming cereus party several years ago. Marie and Roger Morse were the hosts. The party was at 3 a.m. because the plants only bloom at night and I think disappears the same night. When we arrived, chairs were placed around the plant and we were to turn flashlights on when given the order. We were all so quiet, just talking in whispers; almost a holy experience. All at once a beautiful white bloom burst open, spreading its petals and sweet fragrance in the air. It was awesome.

Jack Webb planted some tomato plants in a large bucket for me. They were just getting to a nice size and ready to turn red. Then, all at once, every tomato disappeared. What a shock. We couldn't think of any neighborhood kids who would do a thing like that. Then, we wondered if deer had been visiting. That is the only answer we could think of. I'm so disappointed. I guess I'll get a BB gun. I'm afraid it is too late. I don't think they will be back, the rascals.
