Random Thoughts: A 'jewel' of a dedication

My daughter, Wanda, and I attended the dedication of the Edward C. McBurney Historical Marker Oct. 7, at Marion County Park and Lake.

There were several speakers and I was especially interested in the talk by Cleland McBurney, son of the honoree. His father, who had been the superintendent in the building of the lake, had overseen the building of several lakes in Kansas. Edward always claimed that Marion County Lake was his favorite, the "jewel" of all the ones he had completed.

After the program, we went to the lake hall for refreshments, and while there, some members of Chat and Dine Club invited us to dinner, and we accepted. What a pleasant evening. Young Landon Leiker, who has been working with Helen Beckham in restoring some of the special features at the lake, gave a talk about the lake and showed pictures he had taken. He made a fine presentation. What a talented young student.

I practically raised my children on the shores of the lake. In the summer, we picnicked at least once during every week.

I'd bet we would drive 50 miles to see such a beautiful lake and here it is — right at our front door.

I have just read Mitch Albom's book, "For One More Day." He is such a good writer — managing to get right into your emotional feelings. I wish every man would read it.

Mother Nature is about to change the climate around here. Better change summer cloths for winter clothes in your closets.
