Random Thoughts: Channing still a show-stopper

You people who watch Martha Stewart's morning show really got a treat this past Friday. Carol Channing was her guest. What a gal! If there ever was a person who commanded the spotlight it is she. She surely must be 80, isn't she? Anyway, when she sang "Hello Dolly" it was such a nostalgic moment. It just made my day.

A while back I read in the papers about A.A. Hyde. He came to Wichita in1872 and got into banking and land investments and became very wealthy. He also got into soap manufacturing and menthol-based salve. Mentholatum! Does that mean anything to you? I raised my children with its use and it still is good. It was wonderful to open up a clogged nose and soothing to a stuffed, coughing chest. What a great invention he made.

He not only made his contribution to health but was instrumental in starting the YMCA and YWCA. He helped build the YMCA facility in the Rocky Mountains at Estes Park. Many of you have stayed there. A wonderful place for a retreat.

Jeanne Carpenter Morse of Topeka was in town a few days ago and so Jean Case, Wanda Burk from Colorado Springs, and I had lunch together at Stone City Café. It is so much fun to visit with friends of long-standing. Jeanne's mother and father were dear friends of mine. They lived in the beautiful stone house at the end of Third Street. We had lots of great parties there. Once on New Year's Eve we almost were snowbound there. Those snow drifts were difficult to get our cars through, but we made it.
