Random Thoughts: Friends, neighbors are a blessing

I don't know how to describe it. About 5 p.m. Tuesday I was suddenly immersed in much bright light and noise beyond belief. Lightning struck a tree just 20 feet from my front porch and I was so shocked.

I didn't know what was happening. I was standing near my front window and saw the huge tree limbs falling toward the street. Crack! Rain came in sheets. I didn't know what to do. I just stood there in a daze of disbelief.

A young city policeman came to the door and said he was just passing and saw the tree limb partly out in the street so he came to inquire if I was all right. Before the evening was over, two more policemen came to check on me. What a wonderful way to show their concern. I do thank them. Then my good neighbors started to come too, to make sure I was all right. Makes you feel good that people do care.

The memorial service in the cemetery was very meaningful and well-attended. The sounding of "Taps" was so touching, makes me want to cry. The Kiwanis club served treats in the school house, giving people a place to sit and visit. A wonderful tradition.

Two of my dear friends, Nadine and Bev Hoch, came to see me. Bev brought her CD player and backup tapes and sat there and sang. She sang, "It's a Wonderful World," "Over the Rainbow," "Yankee Doodle," and others.

That old Indian scout Chingawassa made a stop over the weekend. I'm sure all those who attended his visit had a good time.
