Random Thoughts: Musical talent abounds in Marion

Music! Music hath charms to soothe the savage heart . . . or something like that. Marion can claim some of the glory of good music. The high school music department received many honors at the April state festival in Salina. The teacher, Kevin Moler, led the concert choir and several soloists to top honors. Congratulations to him and his students.

This is the 19th consecutive year that the band has received top ratings. Now if that isn't a record to be proud of, I don't know what is. Congratulations to Mike Connell and his students.

Maybe we should put a statue on the school grounds honoring Mr. Connell. I'm sure it takes a lot of hard work in practice, and precious time, too.

I remember a song. I think it is called, "Oh Perfect Day." We certainly have had some of those this past week, and flowers are blooming everywhere. If you drive around the Marion County Lake, you will see some mighty beautiful displays.

Right now, I'm reading a book, "The Lady and the Unicorn," by Tracy Chevalier. The story takes place in Brussels and Paris. It describes the making of a tapestry. The real tapestry now hangs somewhere in Paris. The story of course, is imaginary with lots of twists and turns of the characters portrayed. It's wonderful how a writer can go back to 1492 and make the people so real.
