Random Thoughts: Nothing like a good story

I read Don Hayen's book. I remember when we moved to Marion in 1920, there was a story about a hanging on a bridge south of Marion, called Dead Man's Bridge. We teen-agers just loved to drive there, just to get a scary thrill. Don did a good job recalling the story.

Speaking of murder mystery novels, it was fun meeting the writer, Nancy Picard, the other night at Marion City Library. I had just read her latest murder story. I told her I wanted to meet the woman who could pull those horrible murders out of her brain. Nancy had connections with the Flint Hills and used that background. She was attractive and gave an interesting talk. The library is to be congratulated for getting an honest-to-goodness, real novelist to speak to us. I hope they do that again.

One time I wrote that Marion needed a good story to happen in Marion, especially an exciting story like the one that occurred in Savannah. It would really bring the tourists here.

We are having wonderful fall weather. I just want to jump into a big pile of leaves or rake them into rooms of a house — let my imagination soar. My neighbor just had a big sycamore tree removed. It had such huge leaves that dropped all year long. I felt bad about it being cut down but glad those big leaves won't be falling on my lawn anymore. Joyce Kilmer, go away. I don't want to think about your poem "Trees!"
