Random Thoughts: Polygamy has its benefits

I thought polygamy was against the law, but a program appeared on TV the other night, telling all about some people who live in western Colorado who practice that custom to this day. Several people spoke, telling of their way of life.

One man had 15 wives and 70 children. He would have to be a millionaire to support a family like that. Several women talked, saying they liked the arrangement, as the housework and child-rearing were shared and made life easier. They claimed there was no jealousy. Just something to think about.

My granddaughter sent me a book written by a 103-year-old woman living in Manhattan. It is the story of her life and what a life it was and is. She was born and raised on a farm in Iowa, went to college, tried her hand at various jobs, and finally became a successful dress designer in New York City. She gets involved in World War II, meets and becomes friends of many world-known people. I guess she ended in Manhattan, teaching at Kansas State.

It's a big, heavy book and I have a long way to go yet. How she remembers all her adventures and the many people she encounters is something. My granddaughter tells me she is a real character and wants to meet me and I want to, but am afraid I will be overwhelmed by her personality. It will be interesting.
