Random Thoughts: Preserved in salt

Emerson Carey died in 1933. He was the founder of one of the nation's largest salt mines. In 1900, he started the Carey Salt Co. The mines are under Hutchinson, left there by an ancient salt sea. After more than a century, 300,000 tons of salt are still mined each year. Not only is salt mined but the huge caves provide a place where records and movies are stored for safety from air and dryness. I'm even in there. Several years ago, when I was doctoring with a surgeon in Wichita, I asked to see my records and he said, "They are in the salt mines in Hutchinson."

Martha Stewart had an interesting show Tuesday morning. She had as her guests, 164 women all named Martha Stewart. They were of all colors, shapes, and sizes. One was from Wichita.

I guess Art in the Park was a big success. Lots of people and in such a beautiful place in which to spend some time. Such a festive atmosphere.

I like fall. Mild day time temperatures and cool nights. It is a sort of lull before winter sets in. The trees and shrubs have been so loaded with foliage that I'm sure we will have a great harvest of tumbling leaves. Some will be red or brown and fun to walk through. I remember as a child I would rake the leaves so as to form a floor plan. A big living room, bedrooms, and kitchen. What a wonderful imagination. Little girls have always liked to play house.

Oh yes . . . hi Old Settlers!
