Random Thoughts: Visit to Emporia scares up a memory

I had a chance to go to Emporia the other day. Mary, my daughter, took me to see my "old" friend Margaret Wolf. She recently moved from her home in Marion to Presbyterian Manor there. The building is huge and attractive. We found her on the fourth floor in a three-room apartment using her own furniture. There also is a small kitchenette. All very comfortable. There also is a small outside balcony where she can sit and watch the clouds sail by.

Her daughter was there and we had a nice visit. It is very hard to leave your home where you have lived a long time. In fact, Marion was her home for 96 years! I think after she gets adjusted to a different style of life she will be glad to be in such a comfortable, attractive place.

While there, I thought about the time I spent a year in college there. I belonged to a sorority and our house was just across the street from William Allen White's home. In fact, the Whites owned our house. Whenever we had parties we often borrowed tablecloths and other things from Mrs. White. She was a very generous and friendly lady.

Sometimes a group of us would walk to town and attend a movie. It would be scary going through the dark streets. We would imagine that some terrible man was following us and run until we were out of breath and ready to collapse.

Nothing more exciting than to work up an imaginary scare when you are young.
