Random Thoughts: Wow! Times are changing

I see in the paper that a woman has been appointed governor of a province in Afghanistan. That is a first and certainly a landmark for that country. I have recently read several books about life in that country. The authors have Muslim names so the customs they tell about must be true.

"Kite Runner" by Rhaled Hosseini is the most dramatic story I have read in a long time. The wonderful descriptions of places and people are just "wow."

Another "wow" is the fact that my lifelong friend Margaret Wolf had a birthday — 96 on March 4. There was a cute article in the Eagle about a lady whose birthday is the same day. She has chosen as her slogan "going forth," as in "March forth or fourth." Margaret is planning to move to Emporia to be near family.

She has lived in Marion every one of those 96 years. In fact within a few blocks and right across from her childhood home. She has been a steadfast, rather shy Marionite, all her life a faithful Methodist church attendant. In fact, her grandfather was a Methodist circuit rider, preaching in churches all over this part of the state. He continued to do that until he settled in Marion.

I have tried to get her to write her memoirs. There are so many good stories connected to her family it is too bad to have them lost in history. She is such a quiet, unassuming lady, a great loyal friend. I'll miss her. "March forth" Margaret.

Well, I'm happy that my "icon" Martha Stewart is now a free woman. I just hope she can make a happy comeback.
