Relay for Life is July 20-21 years ago

American Cancer Society Relay For Life Marion County will be from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. July 20-21 at Tabor College track, Hillsboro.

This year's goal countywide is $40,000.

The annual event raises money for the cancer society in an effort to remember those who died from cancer, support those who are battling cancer, and one day eliminate the disease.

Peggy Blackman, chairman for the countywide event, anticipates more than 250 participants in the annual event. Team sponsorships also are available and donations are accepted.

A picnic will kick off the event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 20 to honor cancer survivors. A $5 donation will be accepted.

At 7 p.m., survivors will walk the first lap around the track, followed by a lap for loved ones of cancer patients who did not survive.

The evening will include entertainment, drawings, and food.

Drawings for participants include two, round-trip air fares provided by Southwest Airlines and Air Tran Airways.

A quilt, made by Marie Kessler of Hillsboro, also will be given away.

Luminarias also may be purchased to honor a cancer patient or in memory of someone who has died from cancer. The names of those being honored will be read at 10 p.m.

At 6 a.m., breakfast will be served, with the relay ending at 7 a.m., July 21.

Flyers will be inserted in utility bills by the cities of Marion, Hillsboro, and Peabody.

"This is a countywide event," Blackman said, with Marion and Hillsboro taking turns in hosting the event. She said some Peabody residents have expressed an interest in hosting the event.
