Remember the good ol' summertime

Picture this: I'm sitting on my front porch, a gentle breeze is blowing, the leaves are fluttering, and all is peaceful. Then comes my daughter, Wanda (who is visiting me), with a tall, frosty glass of root beer float. What a great summer treat! Who could ask for more?

I'm trying to remember summer on the farm when I was a young child. What did we do? My younger sisters and I picked up broken pieces of glass and pottery and used these for dishes. We prepared mud into mud pies and served our dolls. Of course, we pretended to enjoy the concoction ourselves. I always liked to squeeze mud between my toes. No one wore shoes in the summer time.

We had a shetland pony and would decorate her with lilac fronds and have a parade. I don't think she liked that particular attention.

I had a pet pig too. She was so pink and clean. I would carry her around in my folded apron. I loved that baby pig.

When my Aunt Maude came to visit we liked to tease her. We would go out to the corn crib and gather some tiny baby mice and tell her to hold out her hand. She entertained us greatly as she screamed, jumping around and dropping them to the floor. I guess we could be accused of cruelty to animals. Oh, dear!

When cousins came to visit we played "hide and seek" and "run sheep, run." I used to play "possum" so my dad would carry me upstairs and put me to bed. I was a pretty sneaky little kid.
