Centre Cougars played Bern at home Friday and were defeated 28-22, but it wasn't for lack of effort. Tye Remy was strong on defense with six unassisted and 15 assisted tackles. Seth Jirak and Dustin Burnett each recovered a fumble, and Burnett had an interception for a touchdown.

The Cougars weren't able to get anything going in the first half and remained scoreless at half-time. A first-quarter touchdown and a last-second touchdown by Bern at the end of the half put Bern up, 14-0.

Determined not to be undone, the Cougars came back strong in the third quarter to tie the game, 14-14.

Seth Jirak ran eight yards for the first touchdown. Dustin Burnett intercepted the ball and ran 47 yards for the second. He also ran for the two-point conversion. Bern was scoreless.

Bern scored first in the fourth quarter to lead by eight points. Centre answered with a touchdown of their own with seven and a half minutes to go, a four-yard run by Lance Diepenbrock. Burnett ran for the extra points.

The Cougars were unable to keep Bern from marching down the field and scoring again. The PAT failed and Bern led, 28-22. It was the final score of the game, as Centre's offense sputtered. They were forced to punt the ball away in their last possession.

"Bern had two tremendous backs and a great defense," Coach Bud Peterson said afterward. "We took them to the point of breaking down, but it never did happen. Our offense sputtered."

Burnett was Centre's leading rusher with nine carries for 48 yards. He also passed for 79 yards. Bryant Gutsch was leading receiver with two catches for 41 yards. Prior to the game, seniors, playing their last home game of the regular season, along with their parents, were recognized. They are: Bryant Gutsch, Andrew Donahue, Dustin Burnett, Jeremy Kristek, Tad Remy, Steve Hageberg, Aaron Bowman, Brent Potocnik, Josh Ryff, and Scott Peterson.
