Replacing dirt at arena will be no small task

It will take more than 400 truckloads to remove 18 inches of dirt from the Marion County Fair Arena.

The fair board had requested assistance from the county to remove and replace dirt in the arena. Public utilities director Jim Herzet reported there would be 3,000 tons of material taken out and replaced in the arena which would equal 400 truck loads.

He said it would take a week just to haul the dirt out of the arena.

In other department business:

— The commission approved the purchase of a new Bobcat skid steer for $4,999. It will replace a year-old Bobcat. With this program, the county will have the option to purchase a new Bobcat every year for approximately $3,500 per year.

"It would be foolish not to do this," said commissioner Bob Hein.

Commissioner Dan Holub agreed.

"There's no question it's a good deal," he said.

— Cardie Oil Company of Tampa had the low bid for transport fuel of $18,779 for 6,500 gallons of diesel fuel at an average cost of $2.278 per gallon and unleaded fuel at $2.258 per gallon.

Cooperative Grain and Supply of Hillsboro presented a bid of $18,811 for the same fuel.

— Holub requested and received a 10-minute executive session with Herzet to discuss personnel.

The meeting reconvened with no decisions.
