Rhodes, Summerville take top road jobs

Staff reporter

Marion County Commission announced Monday that two people have accepted that top jobs in the road and bridge department.

Martin Rhodes, City of Hillsboro Building Inspector, and John Summerville, an employee of Deer Trail Implement of Marion, were hired as the public works director and road foreman, respectively.

Rhodes has been with the City of Hillsboro for nearly five years and resides in Hillsboro. He said he didn't have any experience with roads and maintenance but has other qualities.

"They don't need somebody who can drive a motor grader but someone who can manage people," Rhodes said.

He said he had spent most of his career working for the Service Master Company, solving management problems.

Rhodes will begin working for the county Sept. 10. Summerville, a rural Florence resident, will begin Tuesday.

Salaries for the two men have not been determined.

In other business:

— The commission approved the purchase of large, metal storage container for the county health department. A building was purchased that was to be placed in the department's parking lot but was not workable because of the unevenness of the concrete.

The storage unit is 20x12x8-feet, and will be purchased from Chuck Henry Sales of Solomon for $3,850.

The other building will be used by another county department or sold.

— The Meehan house at 401 Columbus Street, Tampa, has been approved by the state historical society for the state historical register.

— A debit/credit card machine will not be considered for installation at Marion County Lake until next spring. Lake superintendent Steve Hudson checked into the costs for the ATM but decided to wait until the camping season begins in the spring.

— County clerk Carol Maggard requested and received a 10-minute executive session to discuss personnel. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

The commission will meet at 9 a.m. Friday for pay day and other business.
