Road issues discussed again at county commission meeting

Staff reporter

Marion County Road and Bridge supervisors addressed road issues Nov. 30 with Marion County Commission.

Commission chairman Bob Hein held signed petitions from residents who complained about the condition of 330th Road (formerly Roxbury Road).

Jim Herzet, road and bridge superintendent, and Steve Hudson, road foreman, reported patching work was nearly completed on 330th Road.

Commissioner Dan Holub asked if traffic will "kick up" patching materials. Hudson responded grader operators in that area would need to keep "working" the roads like 330th Road and Remington Road that was recently overlaid with ground millings. Herzet said eventually those roads will need to be torn up and rebuilt.

County crews currently are working on roads four miles east of Tampa to K-15.

In other department business:

— Herzet reported that Shilling Construction will do the overlays for the Peabody streets and then shut down for the winter.

The company has already used the 25 working days allowed by contract and will be charged for two days at $1,000 per day that it could have worked but didn't.

— The department would like to purchase a skid steer milling machine next year. Hudson said it would speedup production, create uniform holes, and spoils from the millings could be used for driveways, and field and bridge entrances.

Commissioner Randy Dallke said he would recommend the equipment be designed for industrial use so it will last.

— Dallke recommended the department and commissioners look at the current condition of motor graders.

— The purchase of a used hammer for a backhoe was discussed. Herzet said it could be used for setting culverts and other times when rock ledges are cleared.

He said there was one available for $5,700.

The commission will take the request under advisement.

— Cardie Oil Company of Tampa had the low bid for area fuel of $12,125 for 6,550 gallons of diesel at an average cost of $1.85 per gallon.

Cooperative Grain & Supply of Hillsboro also presented a total bid of $12,347 for the same amount of fuel at an average cost of $1.88 per gallon.

— Road crossings were approved for American Energies.

— Herzet requested and received a 15-minute executive session to discuss personnel.

The meeting reconvened with no decisions.
