Roland Unruh

Roland J. Unruh, 83, died Oct. 23, 2006, of cancer at Bethesda Home, Goessel. He was a farmer and industrial mechanic.

Born Feb. 21, 1923, in Marion County, he was the son of Jacob H. and Lena Smith Unruh.

He graduated from Roxbury High School, joined the U.S. Army in 1943, and served in the South Pacific as a lineman. He was discharged in 1946. He returned to Kansas and helped his father farm.

On Jan. 1, 1949, he married Elva Dora Heidel of Marion. She survives of the home.

He was a member of the American Legion and VFW of Newton. He worked for Harley Sales and Lansdowne Equipment before moving to California. Upon his return to Kansas, the couple lived and worked on a farm near Walton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and three sisters.

Survivors include two sisters, Bertha Goentzel of Lehigh and Ellagene Bull of Covina, Calif.

Private family graveside services will be held with Peter Hartman, chaplain of Hospice Care of Kansas, officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Miller Funeral Home, Goessel.
