Glenn and Rose Hand of Wichita visit Cottonwood Point at Marion Reservoir at least once a month from May through September.

They like to spend time there during the week when the campsite isn't busy. They usually stay about eight days at a time, but sometimes as long as 14.

"It's a really good area to walk," Rose said. "I always feel safe walking here. The fishing usually is good, too."

The Hands have been camping at Marion Reservoir since its establishment in the late 1960s. At first, they camped at Durham Cove but later acquired a 40-foot camper and moved to Cottonwood Point.

Glenn and Rose retired in the mid-1990s. She worked as a consultant for nursing homes. He was in the Air Force for 20 years and in the civil service another 20 years.

Rose said she worked with Ken Vinduska when he was administrator of Marion Manor.

The Hands buy food and other supplies in Hillsboro and Marion and sometimes browse through stores. They have eaten at Kingfisher Steakhouse & Lounge at Marion County Lake and at Olde Towne Restaurant in Hillsboro. They often pick up local fast food.

Their three children and two grandchildren, who live in Wichita, often join them at the lake. They plan to continue to enjoy the campsite for years to come.
