Roy Hett

Roy C. Hett, 92, died June 13, 2004, at Marion Manor.

Born April 23, 1912, on the family farm five miles northwest of Marion, he was the eldest son of Conrad and Stella (Dunlap) Hett.

He attended country school at the Sunflower School and Pleasant View School and graduated from high school in 1929.

After high school he planned to go to business college but it was during the Depression and money was scarce so he began working with his father doing odd jobs and farming. In the early 1940s when the Rural Electric Association brought electricity to the area, he studied and learned to do wiring for homes and other buildings.

On June 5, 1949, he married Rose Olive Schlender at Ebenizer church near Olpe. The couple lived on the farm east of Marion and raised two children.

Through the years, he was active in community and church. He was a member of Youngtown United Methodist Church and served as treasurer for more than 62 years. He also was a member of the Marion County Fair Association, served as a delegate to the state agriculture convention in Topeka, was treasurer of Centre Township for 28 years, served as District 23 school board member, and later was a member of Marion USD 408 school board for six years. In addition, he was involved in 4-H, Sunday school, was treasurer of the former mutual phone service, and the local co-op.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Olive of Marion; son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Pam Hett of Marion; daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and George Coe of Wichita; a brother, Paul Hett of Parsons; a sister, Elma Piper of Abilene; a foster son, George Bales of Topeka; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at Eastmoor United Methodist Church with the Revs. John Goering and Paul Hett officiating.

Musicians were David and Shirley Bowers.

Casket bearers were George Bales, Dan Bales, Marvin Sittner, Warren Hett, Greg Bowers, and Leonard Klassen.

Honorary casket bearers were Dean Batt, Jack Spain, Jack Taylor, Jack Swain, Jack Summerville, Jack Beaston, Dale Christensen, Jerry Higgins, and Darrell Weigart.

Burial was in Marion Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established with the church.
