Sales tax revenue dips again in January

Marion County Commission met briefly Friday morning to approve payroll and accounts payable vouchers and conduct other county business.

Total accounts payable including payroll was $657,289.

County clerk Carol Maggard reported sales tax revenue for January was $38,316 which was a decrease of nearly $8,000 from January 2004. The county had a decrease of $13,137 for year-to-date for the same time last year.

In other business:

— A letter will be sent to economic development advisory board members. A meeting will be held to discuss a county development position and finalize a job description.

— Commissioners approved a letter to Kansas Department of Transportation regarding continued negotiations for road repairs due to U.S.-77 reconstruction.

— Maggard reported the county's network consultant, Lloyd Davies of Great Plains Computers & Networking, suggested the county purchase a spam screen guard to filter spam and "junk" e-mail.

Three bids were presented for a one-year subscription for the protection at a cost of $628, $656, and $663. The commission approved a bid from Great Plains Computers & Networking for $663.

— Area fuel bids were awarded to Cooperative Grain & Supply of Hillsboro for a total of $11,483. A total of 6,550 gallons of diesel to be delivered to four sites averaged $1.75 per gallon.

Cardie Oil Company of Tampa also presented a total bid of $11,838. It was noted the total area fuel bid Feb. 28 was $10,281.

— The commission approved a road crossing for SBC on Remington Road.

— Acting county road and bridge superintendent Jim Herzet distributed reports to the commission regarding fuel mileage for county trucks.

Herzet said the information can determine the cost per ton to haul rock, which was determined to be $7.90.

— A public hearing will be announced regarding the county's comprehensive plan and zoning regulations.

— Bill Smithhart, county noxious weed director, requested and received a five-minute executive session to discuss personnel. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

The commission did not meet Monday but will meet at 9 a.m. Friday in the courthouse to canvass Tuesday's election.
