Santa makes surprise visit

It wasn't the night before Christmas, but children living in Ramona were delighted, nonetheless, when Santa Claus made a surprise visit Saturday evening to their homes.

A thick layer of snow blanketed the ground and the still air was cold and crisp, a perfect setting for a visit from the jolly old man.

Santa arrived at each home riding a tanker truck provided by Ramona Fire Department. He distributed goodies and gifts to the children.

The fire department's Humvee bush truck cleared the way, breaking through drifts of snow.

Plans for the event were made beginning in October when Connie and Dan Smith, owners of DC Trucking, asked Santa to make this special visit.

They and a few friends from Ramona Fire Department accompanied Santa on his rounds.

"Thanks to the fire department, we were able to get through the drifts," Connie said. "And thanks to those who helped, we were able to make this a very merry Christmas for the children of Ramona."
