Sassy Senior Moments

By JANET BRYANT

Senior center reporter

I'm writing this on the first day of summer, which we will celebrate later today. We will be having freezer pops after lunch.

We recognized Jane Makovec's birthday June 14. Her granddaughter, Amy Makovec came along and played "Happy Birthday" on her saxophone.

We welcomed Debbie Cook as a substitute dining room volunteer.

Val Morgan came June 14 with her three sisters, Esther Hendrix, Lois Shank, and Edith Helmer.

Elsie Reiswig brought Father's Day placemats she had created on her computer. We recalled Dad's famous sayings such a, "You want something to do? I'll give you something to do."

Pauline Edmunds brought two scrapbooks for us to see. One is "Pauline's Poems," and the other is "Down on Oklahoma Red Dirt Road," her family history. They are wonderful to read and as keepsakes.

Lois Johnson brought treats June 18 for her birthday.

There will be a State of Kansas Senior Citizens Spelling Bee, the first of its kind, Oct. 11. One of the judges will be Nancy Kassebaum Baker. Anyone over 50 may enter. The first 50 words will be in written form, then the top 15 spellers will compete orally. Forms are available at Marion Senior Center.

Remember the cookout and dance Thursday in El Dorado.

We will be closed July 4. Join us July 3 for a picnic menu and some patriotic songs.
