Sassy Senior Moments

By JANET BRYANT

Senior center reporter

We have had a full and busy week with people now expecting some special activity every day!

We celebrated the first day of summer June 21, inviting everyone to wear shorts, flip flops, etc. We were especially cool with our sunglasses. An area was set up with a wading pool, sand pail, folding chair, fishing rod, beach ball, and beach umbrella. Thelma Blosser displayed a woman's bathing dress once worn to the beach. It covered most of the body.

It also was Senior Center Day. During the business meeting, Sue Clough was elected president of the group. The program was presented by Herb Jackson, Estelle McCarty, and Leonard Klassen, who each provided vocal music.

June 22 was "Take Your Dog to Work Day." We had three live dogs and two plush toy dogs. Rowena Olsen brought her apricot poodle, Honey. Lanell Hett brought Harley the Wonder Dog and his sidekick, Champ. They performed several tricks. Elsie Reiswig and Mary Ann Timm brought their toy dogs.

The newsletter crew arrived Monday and did a speedy job of preparing the pages for mailing. Lanell Hett supervised Ivanlee and Mary Ann Timm, Albert Steele, Lindsey Hett, Norma Woerz, Beulah Weigart, Jane Makovec, Evelyn Jewett, Elsie Reiswig, Nora Richter, and June and Lois Jost.

Pauline Edmunds brought candy bars to thank the senior center for being a caring place.

The next day 13 people ate here early and boarded the van to go to the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson to see "Hurricane on the Bayou." Leonard Klassen drove. Those going were Evelyn Jewett, Keith and Norine Holtsclaw, Marilyn Geis, Rex Wilson, Betty Johnson, Charles Montgomery, Virginia Downing, Shirley Moore, Janis Shanklin, and Larry and Thelma Blosser.

Shirley Bowers played the piano for us that day instead of our usual walking to taped music.

Vivian Conyers brought candy bars to celebrate her birthday. Albert Steele brought in a painting to display on our easel. Lanell Hett read a postcard from Noreen and Mick Weems.

We had a wonderful Apron Day June 27. Thelma Blosser, in her Raggedy Ann costume, brought her collection of aprons and gave the program. Many wore aprons including two guys. Herb Jackson had a barbecue apron and Ralph Popp wore a carpenter apron. Rhonda Brenzikofer read a poem. Several women told about their aprons from grandmothers, those made with feed sacks, and other stories. They were Shirley Moore, Shirley Bowers, Madonna Schafers, Nora Richter, Iva Unruh, and Pauline Edmunds. Janet Bryant showed how her mother's unique apron should be worn. There was an apron parade. We're already planning next year's event.

Come join us for lunch July 11. Anna Woods, who works at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro will demonstrate strength, balance, and conditioning exercises.
