Sassy Senior Moments

By JANET BRYANT

Senior center reporter

We're still looking for those first ripe tomatoes we hope someone will bring us. Visions of bacon and tomato sandwiches are dancing in our heads.

We welcomed Connie Fisher as a substitute dining room volunteer. Rex Wilson filled in as a meals on wheels driver, also.

We had birthday treats July 16 from Mary Hett and Charles Montgomery. Mary baked angel food cakes for us. Candy bars are good, too.

In honor of our jigsaw puzzle crew, especially Ivanlee Timm, I read "Everything I Needed to Know About Life I Learned From a Jigsaw Puzzle."

July 16 was Cow Appreciation Day. We had a display of cow items, had bovine trivia, a video cartoon with cow characters, and Milk Duds for treats. There was a melodrama presented about the mortgage on the cow. Charles Montgomery was the cow; Marilyn Geis was Ma; Ralph Popp was Pa; Larry Blosser was the hero; brother Claude was played by Harold Conyers; sister Sue by Sue Clough; and the villain (boo! hiss!) was Leonard Klassen.

Woody Crawshaw brought birthday treats July 17.

Come join us for the National Day of the Cowboy Friday. Wear your western duds and hear cowboy poetry. Callie Jo Peterson of Marion and Billie Jo Claassen will be guests. They were honored as top cowhands at the 2007 EquiFest of Kansas. They also are founding members of the Women's Ranch Rodeo Association.

Join us for lunch Aug. 1. Becky Lind, dietitian, will talk about the immune system.

Last week's news

Occasionally we want to share statistics: in June we served a total of 927 at the center, delivered 840, and 118 full pay meals for a total of 1,885 meals. Our kitchen crew keeps busy.

We've had one entry in our unauthorized produce derby. Shirley Bowers brought in a nine and one-half pound cabbage measuring 42 inches in diameter.

Anna Woods, Parkside Homes, Hillsboro, gave a presentation on strength, condition, balance, and stability. She offers some classes to the public as well as including water aerobics. We were delighted to learn that because our body cells die and are renewed we have a brand new body every three months!

We've kept our minds exercised too, with a quiz on game show hosts and July true and false trivia.

Come in to "cool" Marion Senior Center — "cool" in both senses of the word — and eat lunch with us.

We welcomed residents of Hilltop Manor June 28. They come once a month. Other groups are invited to come as well.

We now have new batteries in the exercise bicycle so you can check your mileage and other important readings.

A postcard was read from Woody Crawshaw, vacationing in Colorado with his wife, Laura.

A postcard was shared by Janet Bryant, a scene of lavender fields in Tasmania, sent by a pen pal.

Shirley Moore brought several pieces of framed artwork she had created.

The produce is beginning to come in. We love it!

Joyce Kellison celebrated her birthday with us June 29.

Charles Montgomery volunteered to steam clean our carpet so it could dry all weekend. Ivanlee Timm moved tables and chairs back in place Monday. We have great volunteers.

Viola Kelsey brought three generations with her July 2 and celebrated her birthday. Granddaughter Jami Harper led us in a healthy choices bingo game after lunch. Jami lives in Georgia and works for an agency serving senior centers. Her mom, Donna Hayen and her daughter, Traci, helped with prizes.

Virginia Bowers had a birthday July 3 and brought treats. Shirley Bowers played a selection of patriotic music on the piano before lunch. We honored the flag with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a patriotic quiz.
