Sassy Senior Moments: Bowers is champion speller

By JANET BRYANT

Senior center reporter

We had a spelling bee June 22 to determine the Marion County champion to go to the Senior Fair in Salina in September. Seven brave people took the 50-word written test. I was the announcer. The winner was Virginia Bowers. She missed only one word — diphtheria.

We've received postcards from a couple of vacationers, Leonard Klassen and Woody Crawshaw.

June 22 was "Take Your Dog to Work Day," which I failed to announce previously. Madonna Schafers went to get her mechanical dog and Lanell Hett went to get Harley, the family poodle, so we could observe this important day.

We celebrated two birthdays with treats from Vivian Conyers and Noreen Weems.

Norine and Keith Holtsclaw each brought in a painting to put on our easels. Norine's is a butterfly and Keith's depicts songbirds.

The newsletter crew was here June 28. It included Jane Makovec, Ivanlee and Mary Ann Timm, Lois Jost, Nora Richter, Beulah Weigart, Norma Woerz, Elsie Reiswig, Virginia Downing, Blanche and Charlie Cowan, and Evelyn Jewett.

We have two adequate wheelchairs to give away. Come on by.

Marion County Democratic Women will eat lunch with us Friday.

Come join us on July 12 when we will present the melodrama, "Dart Day at the Lucky Strike." Characters include the villain, Dick Dastardly, and the hero, Harry Handsome. Which of our diners will portray these characters? Rehearsal and performance are one and the same.

Retired St. Luke Hospital personnel will eat lunch with us that day, too.
