Scholarship group to host golf scramble

Marion High School Coaches Scholarship Program committee will host a four-person golf scramble July 9 at Marion Country Club.

The fee is $60 per person, and entry forms must be filled out by Friday to guarantee a cart.

It will be a noon shotgun start that includes green fees, drinks, food, prizes, and carts.

The scramble is limited to 18 teams, and individual entries are welcome.

The money will help MHSCSP raise money for its organization. The program is designed to honor former MHS coaches who had positive impacts on the field, as well as off the field. The money allows the program to provide scholarships for graduating athletes.

If you cannot attend but would like to make a donation you may do so.

Miller retires after seven years with MCSEC

Fred Miller, executive director of Marion County Special Education Cooperative, is retiring after seven years at the helm.

"I retired once before but came here to do some things I hadn't experienced before," he said. "I looked at it as a breath of fresh air professionally, and it was."

Programs haven't changed much at the cooperative since Miller took over leadership.

"When I came here, I thought Marion County had a quality program and I didn't want to change something that was working well," he said.

The only change was in bringing the Life Skills students from the various schools to Florence.

"We felt like we could do a better job with teaching if we brought them all together," he said.

According to Miller, the numbers of students enrolled in special education in Marion County remained relatively stable during his tenure.

Miller lives in rural Emporia and plans to pursue his primary interest, the Pony Express.

Every year, he participates in a re-ride. He is involved in promoting the history of the Pony Express and the marking of trails.

Miller also likes to spend time working on his collection of old cars and trucks.
