Scouts collect supplies

To the Editor:

It amazes me what a small town can do. Recently, Marion Girl Scouts collected supplies for a "care" package drive for wounded U.S. military members in a hospital in Baghdad, Iraq.

Each Scout's family was asked to participate by buying $1-5 worth of supplies. The girls collected used magazines, used books, shampoos, soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, aspirin, Ramen noodles, pens, pencils, paper notebooks, playing cards, cough drops, Chapstick, lifesavers, gum, wipes, and toilet paper. They also sent get well cards and Christmas cards.

The girls wanted our troops to know they care about them and to remind them they are heroes in our eyes.

The coordinator for the drive is a research analyst for the State of Kansas and a Navy Reservist. The coordinator's commanding officer still is in Baghdad and started this program to get "care" packages to wounded U.S. military members who were in the hospital.

The Girl Scouts in Marion donated five boxes of supplies to the "care" package drive. The girls did an awesome job of collecting supplies! The coordinator mailed 40 boxes, equaling 800 pounds of supplies to Baghdad.

Scouts do a lot of community service in Marion, so we thought this was an excellent service project for our country. Our small area of Scouts made a big difference to many soldiers. We hope all soldiers come back safely to their families.

We are working to make our world a better place. It is great to be a Girl Scout.
