Search continues for lake superintendent

Marion County Commissioner Dan Holub reported May 21 that bait and concessions would be sold at the county lake office during Memorial Day weekend.

Since a lake superintendent has not yet been hired, concerns were expressed about having bait, beverages, food, and other camping items available during the holiday weekend. Efforts were made by the county commission to have non-profit organizations and youth groups operate concessions but no group came forward.

The commission reviewed applications for the lake superintendent position.

In other business:

— Marion County Economic Development Director Teresa Huffman was appointed as chairman of Marion County Economic Development Council and will be a non-voting member of the board.

Huffman asked the commission to consider making the chairman of the council a non-voting member. Since Huffman is setting the agendas for the monthly meetings, collecting all invoices for payment, and is the county contact person for the council, the commission decided to make her the non-voting chairman.

The commission also requested a monthly report of council activities instead of quarterly or annually.

Commission chairman Randy Dallke said with Huffman being the chairman, this will allow the volunteers within the county to concentrate on the council and its activities instead of spending time organizing the meetings.

— Marion County Clerk Carol Maggard reported she will seek a new proposal for waterproofing the exterior of the courthouse.

Holub asked if there could be more landscaping on the courthouse lawn. Maggard responded it was difficult to water the lawn and other plants because the water well is on the south end of the property. She added there is a landscaping plan for the courthouse.

— Michele Abbott-Becker, communications and emergency management director, reported she will send letters to those cities who have not responded to her requests for information to ask if she can sign off on a county mitigation plan. The plan must be in place for the county and cities within the county to receive federal funding in case of a disaster.

— Sheriff Lee Becker reported that he and architect Tony Rangel of Law/Kingdon of Wichita, have been in contact with the state fire marshal's office regarding issues with the jail.

— The commission approved a revised performance appraisal document for county employees. The evaluation will be two pages with a third page for supervisor and employee comments.

— Various executive sessions were held for personnel.

Abbott-Becker requested and received a 20-minute executive session. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

Becker requested and received a five-minute executive session. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

Dallke requested and received a five-minute executive session to discuss personnel. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

The commission will meet at 9 a.m. Thursday at the courthouse.
