LETTERS:   Seat belts years ago

To the Editor:

This past week I had an automobile accident. Because of it, I would like to take this opportunity to urge everyone to wear seatbelts.

Our family has had two other accidents resulting in very minor injuries where seatbelts were a major factor. I click mine on every time I get into a vehicle even if I am only going two blocks to the grocery store.

I am sure that having my seat belt on and God's guardian angel saved me from serious injury when I rolled or flipped my Explorer. When the vehicle stopped, I was still in my seat, securely strapped at the top of it. I had no injuries. For that I am very thankful.

Thanks to those who were there to help, the EMS crew and hospital personnel on duty July 26. Thanks also for the many calls, cards, and inquiries about my status at home.

I have heard "reasons" why people don't wear their seatbelts, for instance, it is uncomfortable, I forget, I make my kids wear them, and I wear them out of town. My response is injuries might feel a lot worse and last longer, make it a habit and automatic, don't the kids deserve healthy parents and need you as well, and you can be rear-ended or broad-sided in town and get hurt.

It takes only a moment to "buckle up." We buy insurance for our vehicles and for our health. Why not use seatbelts as insurance for our bodies? Vehicles are replaceable, but our bodies are not. Consider it part of your "wellness package" to preserve your health. Even if you cannot afford insurance, you can afford to buckle up. It might even prevent some expenses later. An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Please, wear your seatbelt and encourage others to do the same, every time you get into a vehicle.
